HEALTH PROMOTION INITIATIVE

I like to live. I have already felt fiercely, desperately, acutely happy, torn by suffering, but through it all I still know, with absolute certainty, that being alive is sensational. ” - Agatha Christie

The Gravataí Unified Health System takes care of women at all stages of life

The Unified Health System (SUS) establishes a series of rights related to women's health through educational actions, vaccines, reproductive planning and the availability of contraceptive methods; from prenatal, delivery to the puerperium; from encouraging healthy habits to preventive exams; from adolescent health care to elderly woman health care, as well as access to mammography exams, Pap smears, among others.

Many of the consultations start at the woman's birth and continue after immunization. SUS, through the National Immunization Program, offers all vaccines recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) free of charge. The National Vaccination Calendar includes not only children, but also adolescents, adults, the elderly, pregnant women and indigenous peoples. In all, there are 19 vaccines for more than 20 diseases, the protection of which begins in newborns, and may extend throughout life. They are vaccines against diseases, such as cervical cancer (HPV) for adolescents and DTPA for pregnant women.

Most services, in the public network of Gravataí, start in Primary Care, in Basic Health Units and or Family Health Units. In the consultation, if necessary, a health professional requests laboratory and imaging tests, according to protocols of the Ministry of Health. After evaluating the results, the woman may or may not be referred to specialized care in the public network. Referrals can also be medicated and / or aimed at promoting health, such as guidelines for dietary reeducation, encouraging the practice of physical activities ...

Care with health promotion in all stages of life is essential in the prevention of Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. According to the Health Brazil 2018 survey, by the Ministry of Health, between 2010 and 2016, the rate of deaths from cerebrovascular accident dropped 11% and 6.2% from heart disease in women between 30 and 69 years of age. However, despite the fall, the two diseases continue to be the ones that kill the most female population in this same age group.

The occurrence of chronic non-communicable diseases is greatly influenced by styles and living conditions. Smoking is one of the main risk factors for these diseases. Women who want to quit smoking can obtain free medicines such as patches, lozenges, chewing gums (nicotine replacement therapy) and bupropion, just look for the health unit closest to your residence.

Municipal health services also welcome women who are victims of violence, whether they are children, adolescents, adults or the elderly. In these cases, they must seek health facilities to receive humanized care and adequate referral. In these spaces, women have access to guidance on post-exposure prophylaxis, the morning-after pill and, in case of unwanted pregnancy, referral to a referral hospital to perform legal abortion. Service takes place without requiring the police report.

Every woman has the right to family planning, having access to information on methods and techniques for preventing pregnancy. The municipality offers for the strengthening of women's sexual and reproductive rights the female and male condom, combined pill, injectable contraceptive (monthly and quarterly), diaphragm, emergency contraception (morning-after pill), mini-pill and copper IUD, safe methods , reversible and available at UBS. In the case of pregnant women, prenatal care, including follow-up throughout pregnancy and the puerperium, is also guaranteed to all residents of Gravataí. During pregnancy, examinations, consultations and guidelines must be carried out at the Basic Health Unit or at the Family Health Unit and, in cases of high-risk pregnancies, in maternity hospitals or reference centers. Follow-up is important to detect diseases that may affect the baby's development, the woman's health and also to guide the mother about breastfeeding, vaccines and child care.

Pregnant women are also entitled to a companion for their indication during the period of labor, delivery and postpartum. Comprehensive and humanized care for the newborn provides for the baby's immediate contact with the mother's abdomen or chest (according to her will) and encouragement to breastfeed in the first hour of life. In this context, it is possible to highlight movements to change the model of care during childbirth and birth, including women in decisions about their bodies, discriminating against unnecessary interventions and obstetric violence.

In the Health Units, every elderly woman has the right to access and integral assessment of her health, with multidisciplinary care and a multidimensional view (clinical, psychosocial and functional) for the elaboration of her care plan. The objective is to promote health and the prevention of diseases and injuries, providing this group with healthy aging and quality of life.

Also in Primary Care, it is also possible to have access to rapid tests for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), such as syphilis, HIV / AIDS and hepatitis C, in addition to sexuality guidelines.

PINK OCTOBER

MONTH OF BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

The month of October is already known worldwide as a month marked by affirmative actions related to the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. The movement, known as the Pink October, has been celebrated annually since the 1990s. The purpose of the campaign is to share information about breast cancer and, more recently, cervical cancer, promoting awareness about diseases, providing greater access to diagnostic services and contributing to the reduction of mortality.

What is pink October and what is the reason for the color pink?

Pink October is the month of awareness and fight against breast cancer. The name Outubro Rosa refers to the color of the ribbon that symbolizes, worldwide, the fight against breast cancer and encourages the participation of the population, companies, and public institutions. It was October 1983 when a five-kilometer run through the streets of Dallas (USA) attracted 800 people to raise funds and draw attention to breast cancer. The promise to get more women to know and fight the disease came from Nancy Brinker, who had seen Sister Susan die at age 36 three years earlier. Since then, the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation has inspired mobilization in several countries. Pink bows and accessories have become a symbol of the campaign around the world.
